The Pontiff spoke after the First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles in which St Paul tells the assembled Jews that the Judeans at the time of Christ had not recognised Jesus and condemned him to death. "Jesus tells how we should love: until the end".

Like the many martyrs and saints who lived "with this awareness of being servants", Christians today also must walk along the path of humility set forth by Jesus. However, the Pope said, Christians must continue to remind themselves that "he is faithful" and that he will fulfill his promise. When asked where we are heading, we say, 'Towards heaven!' 'So what's heaven?' some ask. We don't know how best to explain heaven. "Heaven is the encounter with Jesus".

Pope Francis said we must often recall this idea: "I am travelling in life to meet Jesus".

"Each of us must say: 'Jesus is praying for me, working to prepare me a place.' He is faithful". This meeting will make us happy forever, he said. He does so because he has promised it. Heaven will be this encounter, this meeting with the Lord who went ahead to prepare a place for each of us.

Pope Francis said that during this journey, Jesus "isn't sitting there waiting for me but, as the Gospel says, he works for us".

The Director of the Holy See Press Office, Greg Burke, released a statement in Spanish on Friday regarding Pope Francis' meetings with victims of priest sexual abuse in Chile. May the Lord give us this grace: "to look up and think: "'The Lord is praying for me, '" Pope Francis said.
