Bradley Cooper premiered the first trailer for his upcoming Lady Gaga-led directorial debut A Star is Born at CinemaCon this week, and according to reports the response was effusive - some were even left in tears.

Making her film debut, Stefani "Lady Gaga" Germanotta" (Golden Globe victor for "American Horror Story: "Hotel") plays Ally, a performer discovered by famed country crooner Jackson Maine (Cooper) when he catches her rolling onstage - in drawn-on eyebrows - during a club set.

"It's a big swing, this movie", he said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Warner Bros. teased a massive slate of films Tuesday, stressing the diversity of their lineup, of "event films, DC tent-poles, animation, first class dramas, elevated horrors and comedies".

A Star Is Born is slated to hit theaters October 5, a prime corridor for awards fare. MGM is Warner Bros.' partner on the film. Pictures Group chair Toby Emmerich.

Before debuting the trailer, Cooper revealed that when he originally pursued Gaga for the lead role, she had one stipulation: that they both sing live.

The three previous iterations of "A Star Is Born" were each nominated for Academy Awards, creating onscreen couples from Janet Gaynor and Fredric March (1937), Judy Garland and James Mason, and Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson (1976).

The story centres on a fading movie star who helps an aspiring actress while his own career spirals downward. Sam Elliott and Andrew Dice Clay co-star in the pic.

In Cooper's take, he plays an alcoholic country music singer Jackson Maine who discovers an unknown talent Ally (Gaga). "I totally get that". You can't control what moves you. You can't contrive or manufacture something that moves you. "It always stayed with me".
