Roma's official website described the deal as "one of the biggest-ever" by an Italian club, in what marks a return to top-level football for the airline after it lost its sponsorship with Barcelona previous year.

Qatar Airways is also one of the shirt sleeve sponsors on Bayern Munich and the German team's official airline.

The partnership will also enable Qatar Airways to engage with millions of the club's fans worldwide, and help Roma reach millions of potential new fans across the globe.

The top-tier squad of AS Roma have played without a main sponsor since 2014 when the Roma Cares charity occupied the main space on the front of the club's playing tops.

They will follow the Catalan side by sharing shirt sponsors with the airline giants.Roma have enjoyed a remarkable season in the Champions League this season and memorably knocked out Barcelona after coming back 4-1 down in the second leg.

The deal means that Qatar Airways will become Roma's seventh ever shirt sponsor in the clubs 90-year history.

The agreement, the largest ever signed by the club, will see Qatar Airways become AS Roma's Main Global Partner, with the airline's logo to adorn the team's shirts through the 2020-21 season.

"Today's announcement is the result of discussions behind the scenes for more than eight months with Qatar Airways. and comes at a significant time in the club's history, on and off the pitch", he added.

"With a new stadium due to begin construction late this year and the team in the Champions League semi-final for the first time in 34 years, it's an exciting time to be a Roma fan".

"We will keep on expanding, keep on recruiting not firing people, not parking airplanes, (and) shrinking the network, doing exactly the opposite", said Akbar al-Baker, the airline's chief executive.

The agreement also further strengthens Qatar Airways' commitment to Italy. The airline now flies twice a day to Rome and Milan, as well as daily to Venice and Pisa.

Last year, Qatar Airways acquired 49% of AQA Holding, the new parent company of Air Italy.

Formed in 1927, Roma is one of Italy's most successful football clubs, winning three Serie A titles, nine Coppa Italia crowns, and regularly competing in the UEFA Champions League.
