A domestic worker from the Philippines was hospitalized in Saudi Arabia after her employer allegedly forced her to drink bleach, Manila's Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed Monday.

Agnes Mancilla was rushed unconscious to King Fahad Central Hospital in Jizan, southwestern Saudi Arabia, on April 2 by concerned members of the Filipino community, according to the statement on April 16.

Mancilla underwent laparotomy, also known as abdominal surgery, in order to flush out the contents of her stomach.

She also told the consul general that the burn marks on her back were actually bite marks of her employer.

He added that consulate officials had visited Mancilla in hospital and authorities in Jizan to file charges against her employer, who was later arrested. They also mentioned that the victim is in "serious but stable condition".

The DFA said a Filipino community leader in the area initially coordinated her concerns with the local police and provided her with temporary shelter until Consulate General personnel arrived and finalized an agreement with the concerned employer.

The Philippine government banned its workers from being deployed to Kuwait in February after the body of a maid was found in an apartment freezer more than a year after she was murdered. Duterte even banned Filipinos from going to work in the Gulf state - one of Middle East countries hosting more than 2 million Filipino workers.

"This escalation will not serve the relationship between Kuwait and the Philippines", Kuwait's Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Sabah said, the New Arab reported.

Last week Mr Duterte said Kuwait had agreed to his demands to improve the working conditions of Filipinos, following negotiations between the two countries on a labour accord.

Diplomatic relations between Philippines and Kuwait soured after Duterte's announcement. In the photo, bottles of Clorox bleach sit on a shelf at a grocery store in San Francisco, California, Feb. 11, 2011.
