The carmaker, now the second largest in the country by sales volume, said it would be proposing new deals with the "vast majority" of its franchisees under a plan aimed at reshaping the network for the future.

The MD of Vauxhall Motors, Stephen Norman, told reporters: "The requirements of the industry going forward and the requirements of the brands Opel and Vauxhall. would not require as many retail outlets as the brands now have".

The chief said that Vauxhall would continue to be Britain's second-largest dealer network after the restructuring.

'We believe some dealers need to make more money, ' said Norman.

He said he did not expect any job losses as a direct result of the action and was confident "people will find work in other franchises".

It is deciding which of the dealers to offer new terms.

The industry has blamed confusion over what the future holds for diesels as the government has indicated plans to rid the UK's roads of both petrol and diesel cars by 2040.

Last year Vauxhall sales fell by 22 percent - down to just 195,000 units.

Brexit uncertainty has also been raised by the industry as undermining consumer confidence with people choosing to stick with their current vehicle rather than buy a new one.

The process is also being carried out across Europe by Vauxhall's sister company, Opel.

He told the Press Association: "We will probably lose a few retailers", but denied reports that a third could be cut.

Now it's the turn of the Vauxhall dealer network to come under fire, as Vauxhall terminates contracts with its entire network, giving dealers two years notice from the end of this month.

Stephen Norman, Vauxhall's managing director, said: "Conditions in the motor industry are changing, the competition is much more ferocious today especially in the United Kingdom than it was five years ago and inevitably there are different methods of consumption of automotive products and services including online and digital".
