Syrian President Bashar al-Assad described USA -led air strikes against the country as an act of aggression during a meeting with Russian lawmakers Sunday.

Washington, meanwhile, prepared to increase pressure on Russian Federation with new economic sanctions, and European Union foreign ministers threatened similar measures.

The leaders will be expected to answer for their decision to join the USA in launching missiles at suspected chemical weapons sites in Syria, in an attempt to punish President Bashar al-Assad's regime for the alleged chemical attack.

The Western leaders were also facing scrutiny at home over their actions.

The event also commemorated "Evacuation Day", Syria's national holiday to mark the final withdrawal of French occupation forces from the country in 1946.

Syria says it knocked down 71 of the 105 missiles fired, but the USA says all missiles hit their targets.

The inspectors were due on Monday to attempt to visit Douma, but the British delegation to the OPCW said they had not yet been granted access, citing the agency's director general. The team will also have to deal with the risk that evidence may have been removed from the site, which lies in an area that has been controlled by Russian military police and Syrian forces over the past week.

"Good souls will not be humiliated", Syria's presidential account tweeted after the airstrikes began.
