The technical glitch hit about half of Woolworths' 995 Australian stores and attached BWS liquor outlets for about 30 minutes on Monday afternoon.

On social media, shoppers around Australia said they had been told to abandon their trolleys and leave the store.

A Daily Mercury reporter at the scene said services had just been restored and customers were once again flowing through the registers.

Numerous customers shared images on social media of long queues after cash registers went offline.

A NATIONAL technical outage halted trading at Woolworths stores, causing chaos for shoppers as their trolleys bank up and some stores closed.

Others have been told to leave the stores.

Woolworths eventually confirmed the outage, apologising for the inconvenience via Twitter.

Woolworths is Australia's largest supermarket chain, with close to 1000 stores.

"We can confirm that an IT issue impacted registers in our supermarkets for a short period of time this afternoon", a spokesperson for the supermarket chain told Computerworld.

The spokeswoman did not say what caused the outage.
