Russian Federation and Syria also clashed with the three Western allies over the legality of the airstrikes and responsibility for the Security Council's paralysis. Haley had no time for that crap and reminded Russian Federation that no one believes them. Trump has blamed Assad and Russian Federation for backing him.

The 15-member council met on Saturday, at Russia's request, the fifth time it has met on Syria since a suspected deadly toxic gas attack in the Syrian town of Douma a week ago.

The U.N. Security Council was to meet again Friday, at Russia's request, to try to defuse the standoff, as U.S. President Donald Trump appeared to back away from imminent action, days after warning Russian Federation to "get ready" for missile strikes.

Some national leaders appeared anxious to avert a showdown between the USA and Russian Federation. And it is ignoring its own unilateral responsibility for it.

The Syrian government has repeatedly denied any use of banned weapons.

Similarly, French President Emmanuel Macron said he had "proof" that the Syrian government had attacked Douma with chemical weapons, without giving further details.

The capture of Douma has clinched a major victory for Mr Assad, crushing what was once a centre of the insurgency near Damascus, and underlines his unassailable position in the war, which entered its eighth year last month.

Videos and pictures from the area show people swarming into medical centers while others show attacked bodies inside homes.

"We welcome this operation which has eased humanity's conscience in the face of the attack in Douma, largely suspected to have been carried out by the regime", Turkey's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Syria's Foreign Ministry condemned the airstrikes as a "flagrant violation of the worldwide law".

At the United Nations meanwhile, diplomats were mulling a draft resolution put forward by Sweden and obtained by AFP that would dispatch a "high-level disarmament mission" to rid the country of chemical weapons "once and for all". If we do not want our soldiers and officers to die, if we do not want, say, some large-scale wars with the loss of civilians, everything is very simple: "the S-300 system", he added. "Now that we have established what we all agree on, let's ask ourselves what we should be condemning here today".

The Russian ambassador to the USA lashed out against the US-led coalition campaign against suspected Syrian chemical weapons facilities.

BAM. If Russia kept its word then Assad wouldn't have these weapons and these attacks wouldn't happen. "Russian Federation can complain all it wants about fake news, but no one is buying its lies and cover-ups", Haley said.

The investigators, who are only mandated to determine if chemical weapons were used and not who used them, were expected to start their investigations into the Douma incident on Saturday, the Netherlands-based organization said. And the three allies are considering a joint military strike in retaliation.
