Second-half goals from Evgen Konoplyanka (50) and Naldo (82) handed Schalke their 16 win of the league season which sees them 20 points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

The goal, which he scored in a home match against Borussia Dortmund on April 15, became the 2,500th for Schalke in their Bundesliga history.

The top four in Germany qualify for the Champions League.

Coach Domenico Tedesco celebrated with fans in the stands.

The result leaves BVB trailing second-placed Schalke by four points in the standings, but coupled with Bayer Leverkusen's victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, the defeat means Dortmund are now fourth in the table on goal difference, with only a four-point cushion over RB Leipzig in fifth. "Everyone knew we could devour any opponent on a good day".

Konoplyanka broke the deadlock five minutes after the break after a mistake from Marcel Schmelzer. The Dortmund captain lost the ball to Daniel Caligiuri, who surged forward and found the unmarked Konoplyanka to pick his spot and blast inside the left post.

The hosts threatened again moments later as Amine Harit lined up a shot from distance that drifted wide of the right post, while Guido Burgstaller dragged an effort to the left of the target on 13 minutes.

Joining on loan at the end of January, Chelsea striker Michy Batsuayi had been enjoying the life at Borussia Dortmund.
