Inmates Killed After Fight Breaks Out at Maximum Security Prison

The South Carolina Department of Corrections says the incident started at 7:15 p.m. on Sunday and it involved multiple inmate on inmate altercations in three housing units.

At least seven people were killed after fights broke out at the Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, S.C., late Sunday.

All prison staff and responding law enforcement were safe after the incident, the South Carolina Department of Corrections wrote.

Emergency services from several SC counties responded to the "mass casualty incident", Lee County Fire wrote in a tweet.

The prison in Bishopville, S.C., about 60 miles northeast of Columbia, houses about 1,600 male inmates.

In March, inmates held a prison officer hostage for around one hour and 25 minutes while they took control of part of their dormitory. The inmates held the officer for about 25 minutes before it was secured by law enforcement. An inmate was killed during a fight in July 2017, another was stabbed to death in November, and a third was killed in February.
