The show tells the story of Dr. Luther Swann (Somerhalder), a doctor trying to understand the disease that turned his best friend Michael Fayne and hordes of others into-you guessed it-vampires.

The comic series was written by Jonathan Maberry.

In addition to starring in the series, Somerhalder is attached to direct. Somerhalder previously helmed three episodes of The Vampire Diaries.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Somerhalder has been cast in the latest original series for Netflix, V-Wars.

High Park Entertainment will produce "V-Wars" along with IDW Entertainment, with IDW also set to distribute the series worldwide (excluding Canada). That disease spreads wide, causing more people to transform, and society to fracture.

"We could not have dreamed of a better choice than Ian Somerhalder to bring his keen understanding of this genre from his years of starring in The Vampire Diaries to lead the cast of V-Wars as Dr. Luther Swann and to be a creative force on this series, as well as to serve as a director this season", IDW Entertainment President David Ozer said in a statement, per Deadline.

V-Wars does not yet have a premiere date, but we'll keep you updated as the production continues. Unfortunately for him, Michael rises to power as an underground leader of the vampires, putting Swann in a hard spot. He and his Rare Birds Productions are now under a pod deal at Warner Bros. Of course, he honed his supernatural skills over eight seasons of The Vampire Diaries on The CW, where he played vampire Damon Salvatore, anti-hero and one point of the Damon-Elena-Stefan love triangle. William Laurin and Glenn Davis have been tapped as showrunners. He is repped by ICM Partners, Untitled Entertainment and Todd Rubenstein of Morris Yorn. V-Wars: Chronicles Of The Vampire Wars has four installments, and is distributed by IDW Publishing, who is also producing the series alongside High Park Entertainment. The genre remains popular with NBC's Midnight, Texas, and Syfy's Van Helsing, among others.
