Eurovision victor Wurst says she is HIV positive

At her account on Instagram Conchita Wurst, Eurovision victor in 2014 revealed she is a carrier of AIDS.

The 29-year-old star, who won for Austria in 2014, said she had wanted to keep the information private, but an former boyfriend had "threatened to go public".

"I have been HIV-positive for many years", the 29-year-old pop singer, whose real name is Tom Neuwirth, told her almost 300,000 followers, adding that she had been forced into revealing her status by a former partner. "In the future, I don't want to give anyone the right to cause me pain and influence my life in that way". I am well in my health, stronger and more active since then, since I have been treated since diagnosis and the virus is below the limits of detection now in my blood.

"I hope to build up courage and take another step against the stigmatisation of people who have become infected by HIV, either through their own behaviour or through no fault of their own".

"The decision to talk openly about your HIV status should be a personal one and not taken away or ever, ever used as a threat", chief executive Ian Green said.

"We applaud Conchita for handling this with such dignity and including in her post that people living with HIV who are on effective treatment, like her, can't pass the virus on".

Born Tom Neuwirth in Styria, Austria, Conchita became an global sensation when she won Eurovision in with Rise Like A Phoenix.
