The body of a young child has been discovered along a Northern Calfornia river by teams searching for a missing family whose SUV crashed into the rain-swollen waterway last week, authorities said Friday.

The Thottapilly family from Valencia, a neighborhood in Santa Clarita, California - Sandeep Thottapilly, 42, wife Sowmya, 38, their son Siddhant, 12 and daughter Saachi, 9 were traveling through Humboldt and Mendocino County on US-101. The family lived in Woodland, Washington, near Portland, Oregon, and were reportedly on a road trip, though Child Protective Services had been trying to reach them for days.

According to the San Jose police department, the Thottapilly family was supposed to have arrived to visit a friend in the San Jose area on April 6 but did not make it as scheduled. They say the items are consistent with a family on vacation and unspecified items were identified by relatives of the Thottapilly family. At a press conference on Friday, the Coroner originally said that the body was that of a child but later said that it was an adult female.

A body that may be one of the remaining three missing children was recovered on April 7.

Authorities have said data from the vehicle's software suggested the crash was deliberate, though the California Highway Patrol has not concluded why the vehicle went off an ocean overlook on a rugged part of coastline.

Searchers are looking for the missing family members and their vehicle which is believed to be submerged somewhere in the Eel River. The search teams were able to cover approximately 12 miles of river bank by foot and 60 miles by helicopter.

Authorities said they have not positively identified the remains. Earlier the authorities announced they were able to locate numerous items that appeared to have come from the vehicle belonging to the missing family.

"Some of these items were consistent with a Honda vehicle".

The California Highway Patrol has also said the crash is thought to have been intentional.

The family was last heard from in the town of Klamath, Del Norte County, on April 5.

And authorities have said social services officials in OR contacted the West Linn Police Department about the family in 2013 while they were living in the area.
