Americans have two extra days to file their income taxes this year

If you're waiting until the last minute to file your taxes, you're not alone.

AARP Foundation tax service also offers free tax assistance for people 50 years and older who can't afford a tax preparation to file federal and Arizona returns. The agency has information here about what you need to do to file for a tax extension.

"Before you respond to them, before you give out any sorts of personal information, even things like your name, date of birth, especially social security number, don't give that information out unless you can absolutely verify that you're speaking with someone that's from the IRS", said Shifflett. The failure-to-file penalty can be as much as 25% of taxes due.

According to tax professionals, the IRS will never demand immediate payment or threaten to call police or immigration or ask for unusual payments, like gift cards or wire transfers.

"They need to file a tax return or extension by April the 17 because failure to file penalties accrue a lot faster and they're more substantial than just a failure to pay penalty; and so even if you can't pay what you owe you need to file the tax return itself", she said.

Tax refunds from four years ago are gone for good after Tuesday. Workers are starting to see more take-home pay as employers implement the new withholding guidelines from the IRS. You must still pay your tax liability to the IRS by April 17.
