Just a week ago, United had put up an inspired performance at the Etihad Stadium, where they came from two goals down to beat City 3-2, and prevented Manchester City's ideal title scoop. "If I was in their position, I would be very upset if someone said they won because United lost against West Brom".

Champions Manchester City have set their sights on rewriting the record books after clinching the Premier League title.

"As much as this has been a record breaking season, this one's for you, the fans", City captain Vincent Kompany told the team website. "Our City. Premier League Champions 17/18".

Mourinho is quoted as saying by Sky Sports: "We are not going to spend more than we can".

Jay Rodriguez bundled home the victor on a scramble off a corner kick in the 73rd minute, but for long portions of the match, United looked to be the same listless side with the ball that got predecessor Louis Van Gaal sacked before Mourinho took over ahead of the 2016-17 season.

A stirring comeback against Pep Guardiola's men last weekend prevented United's neighbours from winning the title and Mourinho suggested that dramatic result created complacency in his side.

United's comeback at the Etihad from a 2-0 half-time deficit offered their supporters a rare fillip of flair and excitement after a hard season where their style of play has hardly endeared Jose Mourinho to the club's fanbase.

West Brom, to their credit, also kept probing forward but they lacked the class required to really open United up at the back.

Jose Mourinho has highlighted exactly how his Manchester United side must improve in order to win the Premier League title next season. Probably because I won eight championships, I was not in the moon with the victory against them.

The 2012 title win had the infamous last-gasp goal by Sergio Aguero. "That doesn't make me feel super happy and in my opinion affected for sure some of the people that was too happy". Everything was complicated. We couldn't think fast, we couldn't play fast.

"We didn't want [to play] or couldn't play simple, everything was slow, one more flick, trick, turn".

Pogba, one of United's underwhelming performers on the day, was taken off by Mourinho after 58 minutes, but his boss has since hinted that he did this because the Frenchman had already been booked.

This title won by the City would be the fifth in the history of the team.
