A New Zealand diplomatic staffer working in the U.S. has deleted tweets urging Democrats to "get your shit together".

Caroline Beresford, Wellington's second-ranked diplomat in the United States, tweeted "get your sh*t together", the discussing Bernie Sanders-Elizabeth Warren Democratic ticket against Trump in the 2020 election.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it did not endorse the content or tone of the now deleted tweets and it expects its staff to remain politically neutral.

Ms Beresford, second only to Ambassador Tim Groser in New Zealand's United States diplomatic contingent, has since made her Twitter account private.

Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters said he was happy with his ministry's response, while a spokeswoman for the US Embassy in Wellington told Newsroom: "We work closely with our hardworking, professional New Zealand counterparts on a daily basis and hold them in the highest regard". "These expectations were not met in this instance". "Yes I did send those tweets and realised very quickly that they were inappropriate, which is why I deleted them", she said.

In a fortuitous series of events, it was Beresford's chocolate Labrador who helped to secure a phone call between newly elected US President Donald Trump and then-Prime Minister Bill English after the 2016 election.

The US is a close ally for New Zealand, although it isn't the first time New Zealanders have shared their disapproval of the larger power since Mr Trump entered the White House.

Responding to an opinion piece from the politics website The Hill, titled "A Sanders-Warren ticket could win big in 2020", Ms. Beresford responded on Twitter, "No it couldn't".
