Djokovic had further surgery on a persistent elbow injury in February.

Djokovic shut down his season after Wimbledon in 2017 and despite not being at his best, made a decision to play at this year's Australian Open where he was ousted by South Korea's Hyeon Chung in the fourth round.

It was clear early that Djokovic didn't have anything close to his best game, in spite of holding a 5-2 lead in the first set.

South African seventh seed Kevin Anderson also prevailed in his second round match, 7-5 6-4 over Russian Evgeny Donskoy.

"But it's not easy to deal with this kind of frustrations after injuries or when you always be the favorite to win a tournament, you come here and you lose in first round". Striking his groundstrokes with conviction and refusing to concede the momentum shift, the Japanese would benefit from 22 unforced errors by Djokovic to snatch the opener in a tie-break.

Novak Djokovic and British No1 Kyle Edmund suffered disappointing defeats at Indian Wells on Sunday.

Djokovic said he felt like it was his "first match" on tour and was unable to explain his opening set stumble or his capitulation in the decider.

Verdasco's first serve proved almost unplayable in the deciding set of the second round match as he improved his career head-to-head record against Dimitrov to 2-2.

"To me, it's not that surprising", Federer said. They previously clashed in the final of the Buenos Aires Challenger a year ago, with Daniel rallying for a three-set win.

He will face 25th-seed Filip Krajinovic in the third round.

"I mean, I just completely lost rhythm, everything", he said.

Daniel, who reached the second round with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 victory over Britain's Cameron Norrie, had never beaten a top-20 opponent before Djokovic, and needed to win a pair of qualifiers to enter the main draw of the tournament.

"I have been sick for over a week and tried everything I could to get better".

The Serb failed to serve out the first set, growing the internal seed of doubt and emboldening Daniel, who at last year's US Open took a set from eventual champion Rafael Daniel.

Frenchman Gael Monfils survived a match point before beating big-serving American John Isner 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3), 7-5 in a contest that had only one break.
