Heavy rainfall predicted in coastal Kerala and Tamil Nadu, fishermen advised caution

Sea condition will be "rough" to "very rough" over Comorin-Maldives area and adjoining sea areas during until tomorrow and over Lakshadweep area and adjoining South-East Arabian Sea until Thursday. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has sent out instructions to the authorities to keep fishermen off the sea until Thursday.

Fishermen, especially in South Kerala, have been warned not to venture into the seas for the next two days as the depression to the south of Kanyakumari has deepened.

The government stepped up the warning for coastal communities in the State as the low pressure zone which originated in the Indian Ocean concentrated into a depression over the south east Arabian sea and lay centred about 350 km off the coast of Thiruvananthapuram.

The government deputes squads to ensure that fishermen don't go to sea from southern coasts. Control rooms in coastal taluks will function till Thursday.

The chief minister had instructed officers concerned to ensure that no fishermen ventured out to sea.

Kerala's chief secretary Paul Antony met different departmental heads Tuesday morning to review preparations.

An IMD bulletin said rain and thundershowers are likely to occur at many places from March 13 to 15 with isolated heavy rainfalls likely over south Tamil Nadu and south Kerala. However the National Disaster Management Authority had claimed that it had informed the Kerala and Tamil Nadu governments about the incoming cyclonic storms and heavy rains.

However, the government along the the State Disaster Management Committee have issued early warnings and are taking measures to safeguard the coastal areas this time.

This would almost make for a playback of the situation evolving in November last that culminated in the development of very severe cyclone Ockhi over Lakshadweep and neighbourhood.

According to IMD, the depression was likely to move north-northwestwards and intensify into a deep depression during next 48 hrs.
