The issue snowballed into major controversy when two senior BJP leaders including Forest Minister Lal Singh and Industries Minister Chander Prakash Ganga joined the rally of Hindu Ekta Manch (HEM) to support the demand for CBI probe into the rape and murder of the eight-year-old tribal girl.

Hawaldar Tilak Raj, posted at the Hiranagar police station, was arrested after it was prima facie established that he had washed Asifa's clothes that were soaked in blood and mud before sending them for forensic test. Sub-inspector Anand Dutta, who was the investigative officer, has been detained for questioning, reported NDTV.

Director General of Police, J&K, S.P. Vaid, while confirming the detention and questioning of the two policemen for "destroying evidence", said, "Anybody found wanting in his professional job shall be proceeded against departmentally and legally".

Asifa was kidnapped from Rasana village on January 10.

According to investigations, she was drugged and held captive for a week before being murdered. They have also demanded that the case should be handed over to the CBI.

Lashing at ruling elite, Geelani said they are trampling all norms and ethics and added that instead of preserving the evidences, the police destroyed all evidences to save skin of those involved in barbarous crime. We are equally concerned over the excessive politicization and communalization of an incident which is clearly one of sexual exploitation, sexual brutality and murder. "There is brazen manner in which ultra-nationalistic discourse is being used to counter the campaigns for justice and shield the culprits", said the joint statement.

"The victim belonged to the marginalised and downtrodden nomadic tribe, whose vulnerability and victimization is well recorded".

"We feel that there is a deliberate attempt to hush up the case by building up a communal narrative around the heinous crime and its investigations. We call upon the government to ensure that investigations by the Crime Branch are fast tracked and are fair to be followed by a fast track court trial so that justice can be dispensed", it said.
