Speaking to Sky, Dennis Wise claimed that the England worldwide is being edged out by Alexis Sanchez, who has been a stonewall starter since joining the Red Devils in January.

The Special One left out record signing Paul Pogba in favour of young McTominay who impressed as the first leg of United's last-16 tie ended goalless.

"I think he's had a lot of playing time this season", he told Sky Sports Super6.

"And to bring him in, in such a big game - Sevilla is a tough, tough place to go for any team - and to put the kid in there in that atmosphere, to trust him, a lot more should have been made of that, particularly with United's history and tradition".

"That's happened to every player I have seen, they dip in and out of the team and they have periods where they don't play".

But he bears the scars of previous failures during his playing days.

"But it's not something I would like to see as an England global - I'd like to see him playing constantly and scoring goals because I think he is capable of doing that".

"I remember Dortmund and Monaco, 96, 97, 98 where we drew away 0-0, came back to Old Trafford and both teams scored in the first 20 minutes and that feeling, "we need to score two" and then you're under pressure, then you're chasing the game. My view is United knew what they were getting when they signed him, and ultimately you have to play him to his strengths".
