CLEVELAND- Next year's NFL Draft could be in Northeast Ohio.

Cleveland and Canton placed bids to host the 2018 NFL Draft, but were passed over for Dallas.

The city of Denver is among five finalists to host the 2019 or 2020 NFL draft, the league announced Thursday.

The Browns, Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission partnered together to submit a bid to bring the event to local fans. The NFL is expected to announce the host cities for both the upcoming two drafts during the Spring League Meeting scheduled for May 21-23 in Atlanta.

The Kansas City proposal includes a main staging area in front of Union Station, with the site sprinkling into Washington Square Park, Crown Center and the lawn of the National World War 1 Museum, Nelson said.

"We've put in an application for 2020 and that may or may not come to fruition depending on how the league feels about when they're going to honor 100th season". In 2015 and 2016, Chicago was the host city.

This year's NFL Draft will be held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas - the first time the event will take place inside an NFL stadium. Last year's draft produced the second-biggest television audience ever, with a combined 9.2 million people tuning into opening-night broadcasts on ESPN and NFL Network.

Two cities will each get one draft; one city can not get both.

"We are pleased to hear that Denver has made the shortlist of cities still under consideration to host the 2019 or 2020 Draft, and we look forward to further dialogue about the possibilities".

"We're excited for what we learned today and anxious to hear the next steps", said Kansas City Sports Commission president Kathy Nelson, who last November accompanied Chiefs president Mark Donovan and city manager Troy Schulte to NY to make a presentation to the league office.
