A former student armed with a rifle stalked the halls of a Florida school, breaking windows and shooting terrified students in a massacre that left 17 people dead Wednesday, authorities said.

In a written statement released Wednesday, John Malloy, the director of education at the TDSB, and Robin Pilkey, the board chair, said the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School are in their thoughts "now and in the very hard days that lay ahead".

He said in a tweet that the White House is "working closely with law enforcement on the bad Florida school shooting".

'Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem.

The gunman, firing multiple times at students and teachers, killed three people outside the school, before entering one of the school's teaching buildings and killing another 12, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said.

Law enforcement responded to reports of a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shortly before 3 p.m. and encountered a chaotic scene.

Former student Andrew Hofmann said Feis, who had worked as a security guard at the school for more than eight years, was "very well dedicated to the safety of the school", The Miami Herald reported.

President Donald Trump is cancelling a planned trip to Orlando, Florida, on Friday after Thursday's deadly school shooting in Parkland. The suspected shooter allegedly triggered the fire alarm to force students and teachers out of their classrooms before he opened fire.

Deputies said Cruz was initially taken to a hospital for labored breathing before being questioned. In September, a YouTuber named Ben Bennight, 36, received a troubling comment on one of his videos from a commenter that went by 'Nikolas Cruz, ' which said, "I'm going to be a professional school shooter".

The mass shooting, said to be 18th school shooting of the year, have rekindled the debate on the controversial gun control legislation in the US.
