Jonny Hunter and L'Etoile nominated for Beard Awards

On March 7, the James Beard Celebrity Chef Tour is featuring cuisine from Miller and Hunter and numerous other Wisconsin top chefs from the 2017 James Beard semifinalists at the Tre Rivali in the Third Ward of Milwaukee.

The Freret Street lounge Cure gets its third consecutive nomination for this national award.

For the fourth year in a row, Jonny Hunter, of Forequarter, was nominated for Best Chef: Midwest. The Ordinary was nominated as Best New Restaurant in 2013.

Saffron NOLA, owned by the Vilkhu family and with executive chef Arvinder Vilkhu, opened past year on Magazine Street. L'Etoile was nominated in the category of "Outstanding Restaurant" past year as well.

Another Louisiana nominees for this award is Manny Augello of Bread & Circus Provisions in Lafayette. Must have been a pastry chef or baker for the past five years.

Two other awards came home to New Orleans in 2017.

Downtown institution Tony's is a semifinalist for "Outstanding Service", another nationwide category.

Camille Cogswell of Zahav again is a semifinalist for rising star chef of the year; she made the finals last year.

Engel left Shaya Restaurant a few months later as part of a shakeup at the Uptown restaurant, which is part of BRG Hospitality, formerly the Besh Restaurant Group. The James Beard Foundation Awards Gala is May 7 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Separate from its chef and restaurant awards, and announced well in advance, the America's Classic Award is meant to recognize establishments of "timeless appeal" that serve food "that reflects the character of their communities", according to the foundation.

Dong Phuong, the Vietnamese bakery and restaurant which is coming off of a Carnival season which saw its extremely popular king cake make headlines, was previously announced as an America's Classics award victor.
