Rizzo knew several of the victims, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, including assistant football coach Aaron Feis, who heroically died while shielding students from bullets during the attack.

The Florida school shooting hit Cubs All-Star and former Red Sox draftee Anthony Rizzo particularly hard - he's a graduate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Parkland, where 17 students were killed on Wednesday by a former classmate.

Almora said Rizzo took batting practice at the high school in the offseason.

The Cubs star also has an annual Walk-Off for Cancer at Pine Trails Park which is very close to the school which most of the community attends alongside Rizzo.

"It's an terrible situation", Almora said. Some things are more important than the game of baseball.

Rizzo tweeted his condolences Wednesday evening: "Parkland and Coral Springs please stay strong!" Rizzo wrote. "This is out of control and our country is in desperate need for change".

He added: "I hope In this darkest of times back home this brings everyone together and we can find love". Follow our Facebook page to get updates on your news feed! "You're all in my prayers".
