Sonnen finally went for a takedown in the final 30 seconds, putting Jackson his back until the bell. In fact, these two added another fold to the opening bout of this heavyweight tournament when Rampage agreed to pay Sonnen 10 grand every time he successfully takes Jackson down. But while common sense has made one-night tournaments a thing of the past, Bellator has rounded-up an intriguing group consisting of eight fighters for its staggered, tournament-style heavyweight grand prix, and the last man standing will go home with Bellator's heavyweight belt. The fighters clinch in the middle of the cage and Sonnen lands a takedown. Most believed Sonnen would be able to come away with the easy win in this tournament opener, and he did just that.

'Why wouldn't you guys want to see me do what I like to do? "I do expect him to hand me it". "When you put it on the line, time after time like I do, you're going to have some losses". A new welterweight champion was also crowned on Saturday, as Rory MacDonald earned a hard-fought five-round verdict over Douglas Lima in the evening's co-main event.

In the end, this awesome battle probably could have gone to either man, but it was MacDonald who came away with the unanimous decision win on all three judges' scorecards.

This weekend is loaded with quality MMA action as both the UFC and Bellator are offering fight fans an entertaining card with no shortage of top-tier talent. Methodically taking apart MacDonald with leg kicks throughout the early rounds and avoiding a full-on wrestling match, Lima proved that he belongs - even though he really didn't have to. He is on a two-fight winning streak after beating Wanderlei Silva at Bellator 180 in June 2017.

Aaron Pico continued his winning ways in Bellator after suffering a loss in his debut past year, earning his second consecutive first-round knockout.

A pro fighter's shelf life can be short, and Sonnen looked terrible past year in losing at the Forum to Tito Ortiz in his farewell fight.
