The Spain global, 30, has played 422 games for the Catalan club since rejoining from Manchester United in 2008.

Barcelona says it has reached a deal to renew Gerard Pique's contract until 2022, adding a buyout clause of 500 million euros ($611 million).

"In the coming days the club will announce the date of the official signing of the new contract, which will keep the La Masia product at FC Barcelona for the rest of the current season and for the next 4 years".

The 30-year-old defender's deal includes a €500m (£441m) buyout clause to ward off any interest in the long-serving Catalan.

Pique, who has earned 94 global caps since 2009, was also a key part of the Spain side which won the World Cup in 2010 and Euro 2012.

Having begun his career at Barca, Pique made his debut for the first team in 2008 after spending time with English club Manchester United, where he learnt his trade under Sir Alex Ferguson.

"In total, a player who identifies with the club more than anyone has earned 25 trophies".

Since then, along with collecting just about every major domestic honour, he has helped Spain to World Cup glory in 2010 and a European Championship triumph in 2012.
