Unlike other Toyota vehicles, this one was designed and manufactured in the United States.

With a 113-inch wheelbase and a 196-inch overall length, the new Avalon is about four inches longer than the Camry and less than an inch longer than its predecessor. "Some of those decisions made have really been an advantage for us, and some probably haven't been, because the public is really asking for (Apple CarPlay)".

The 2019 Toyota Avalon, uncloaked at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, will include Apple's CarPlay among its high-tech features. "And our guests are going to love it", Hollis said.

The company used the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit Monday to unveil the all-new Avalon and Avalon Hybrid. New stamping techniques also aided in shaping the car's sculpted forms and complex surfaces. Engineered wood trim is found on the XLE, while the Limited features real wood trim. The new vehicle, the fifth-generation Avalon that Toyota has produced, has a bolder looking exterior and new 3.5-liter V6 or the Toyota Hybrid System II engine.

In addition, the 2019 Avalon utilizes what the Japanese automaker describes as a trifecta of new lighting elements such as signature DRL and Parking Light with Technical Laser Ablation, which allows light to transmit through its transparent areas encased by a laser-ablated, metallized inner lens. It also is featured in the current Toyota Highlander and Tacoma, as well as the Lexus GS and RX. Also new is the eight-speed automatic, along with the hybrid powertrain, which mixes a 2.5-liter inline-four engine with two motor-generators, with a nickel-metal hydride battery pack. These measures help improve fuel economy, Toyota says, although it doesn't cite figures in press materials. The Avalon's 2017 tally was 32.2% behind 2016's 48,080.

Unfortunately for Canadians, Toyota says it will initially only sell vehicles with CarPlay in the USA only. He also believes it's an important product for those who may want to step down from a luxury vehicle into more of a near-luxury offering.

Toyota has done a lot to up the sportiness of the Avalon, with an Intake Sound Generator (ISG), Active Noise Control (ANC) and Engine Sound Enhancement (ESE) for a more tuneful engine note, plus a new multi-link rear suspension with revised trailing arms, dampers and bushings, thicker anti-roll bars, stiffer spring rates and a wider rear track.

The Avalon has never been a sporty sedan-especially given its typically geriatric buyer demographic-but that isn't stopping Toyota from trying to give the sedan a bit more snap.
