"The Passat GT illustrates how the North American Region can shape Volkswagen vehicles specifically for the US market", said Dr. Matthias Erb, chief engineer of North America for Volkswagen.

Until now with the Passat, you had to choose either show or go.

Pricing for the 2018 VW Passat GT starts at $29,940. The Passat R-Line starts at $25,845 and the loaded V-6 SEL Premium starts at $35,500.

Volkswagen got a jump on the North American International Auto Show in Detroit by revealing the limited edition Passat GT on Friday, a new sporty trim level of the brand's upscale sedan. It borrows the R-Line bumper and adds a honeycomb grille, GT badge, and a red accent line, much like the Golf GTI. The roof is black and so are the mirror caps, window, and door trim. The rear has a black spoiler and tinted LED taillamps, together with black trim on the bumper and a double exhaust with VW's acoustic package.

LED headlights, optional on the R-Line are standard, and the GT has LED daytime running lights and blackened LED taillights. Two-tone 19-inch "Tornado" wheels are standard, with red-painted brake calipers. It's available in four flavors-Pure White, Reflex Silver, Platinum Gray, and Deep Black. The seats are black leatherette with Moonrock Gray inserts and contrast stitching. A leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, driver's power seat, dual climate control and heated side mirrors are among Passat GT's standard features. Tech wise there's an infotainment unit with 6.3-inch touchscreen display that's Apple CarPlay and Android Auto friendly. It has a USB port in the front and one for the rear seat. The new GT's crown jewel is a narrow angle 3.6-liter VR6 engine that offers 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a standard six-speed DSG automatic transmission with Tiptronic, which features steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

VW claims that its EPA estimated fuel economy is 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. The GT also gets a sportier suspension that's been tweaked slightly lower.

The production model looks almost identical to the concept Passat GT that VW revealed at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show. The Editorial department is independent of Cars.com's advertising, sales and sponsored content departments.
