Trinamool, BJP workers clash at rally

Police sources said that a huge police contingent was rushed to the spot and the situation was brought under control.

Tension soon spread to Central Avenue where BJP workers attacked TMC volunteers, alleged the latter. Workers of both the parties pelted stones at each other near Red Road in Kolkata.

The clash ensued when sloganeering TMC workers allegedly pelted stones at the BJP headquarters around 10.30 am. During the incident, the vehicle of the Special Officer appointed by the Calcutta High Court, Rabindranath Dey, was also damaged. "Despite having the court order, we are not being allowed to take out the bike rally.We have made a decision to cancel our programme", state BJP president Dilip Ghosh told reporters outside state BJP headquarters as he demanded the imposition of President's Rule in the state. BJP state president Dilip Ghosh was scheduled to join the rally from Swami Vivekananda's ancestral home.

TMC MLA from Jorasanko Smita Bakshi refuted allegations of assault by BJP leader and councillor Meena Devi Purohit. "Our party will never allow a communal force such as the BJP to disturb the peace prevailing in the state", she said. "They were hurling abuses and brandishing lathis", Panja said.

TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee also condemned the violence and accused the BJP of letting loose a reign of terror just for making it to the front pages of newspapers. A senior police officer was also injured during the clash.

BJP and Trinamul supporters clashed in the heart of Calcutta on Swami Vivekananda's birth anniversary on Friday morning, prompting the state BJP to announce the "atrocities" on its workers had led Union minister Nitin Gadkari to cancel his participation in the Bengal government's business summit next week. It was staged by the BJP to get media attention, he said.

Told about the reason given by Gadkari's office for his likely cancellation of the trip, a state BJP politician said: "That's the official reason that Gadkari, as a Union cabinet minister, has to give to the state government".

The party said its was tough to carry on with the programme in the present circumstances.

The BJP had chose to take out a bike rally across the state from January 11 to 18 as part of its "Pratirodh Sankalp Abhiyan". On Saturday, it will protest outside every police station in the state.

The BJYM alleged that they were attacked by TMC "goons" when they were trying to take out a rally from the Jorabagan area.

A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice J Bhattacharya and Justice A Banerjee directed that further movement of the rally be postponed till January 15 and would end at Coochbehar on January 20, two days after the original schedule. When our workers made a stopover at Kanthi, they were attacked. Without naming the BJP, the CM had said that if any trouble occurs at Gangasagar, the saffron party would be responsible.

A BJP delegation will meet Governor K N Tripathi this evening and lodge a complaint about the incidents, party sources said. The party has also made a decision to organise a demonstration outside all police stations in the state tomorrow.
