"That and Walmart are all we have - we don't live in an area where there's a Costco or a Target on every corner". "After a thorough review, it became clear we had built clubs in some locations that impacted other clubs, and where population had not grown as anticipated". Shoppers can buy huge quantities of merchandise, including products not found at Walmart, as well as fill up on gasoline. The companies say the bonuses they've announced are a way to share some of their bounty with their workers, though in some cases it's a very small percentage of their gains, and are less valuable to employees than permanent pay raises. Competition from Costco and BJ's Wholesale Club was cited as reasoning.

When asked about the workers who will lose their jobs as a result of the Sam's Club closures, however, Mnuchin responded: "Different companies will do different things".

Arkansas-based Walmart also reportedly raised the hourly minimum wage for its USA workers to $11 and improved benefit offerings such as parental leave.

On Wednesday January 11th, Sam's Club announced the closings of 63 stores nationwide, including the one in Moline. Some reported that bewildered employees showed up to work to find out they no longer had a job. In an interview on Thursday, John Furner, the chief executive of Sam's Club, did not go into detail about the reasons for the unusually sudden move.

The store will reopen Friday before permanently closing in two weeks.

Employees at the New Caney Sam's Club, located at 22296 Market Place in the Valley Ranch Town Center, say they were shocked Thursday morning to learn the store was closing and they were being laid off.

In October, Sam's Club had 660 wholesale retail locations in the United States while Walmart had 5,412 locations. The store wasn't underperforming, Hatfield said, but the company chose to close the location as part of a review regarding the "right mix of clubs" and emphasis on e-commerce under CEO John Furner. "We need to make sure we have the right mix". "I am not going to second-guess and change my mind at this point".
