New Health Fad 'Raw Water' Is Actually Pretty Dangerous, Experts Warn

If you drink raw water, you could be subjecting yourself to the spread of harmful bacteria, parasites, and viruses. The reality, though, is one that could involve serious illnesses uncommon in modern America. The small companies bottling their untreated product have hiked the price from $36.99 to over $60 for a 2.5-gallon jug.

It's water that hasn't been filtered, treated or sterilised at all, which, according some people in LA and San Francisco where the trend spawned, means it's chock-full of minerals, algae and, allegedly, probiotic bacteria.

"If you've got the luxury of a treated, piped water supply to your home available, it's not really a good idea to drink untreated water", he said. Drinking raw water - including that collected from the most pristine springs - is "dangerous", food safety expert Bill Marler told Business Insider. She also said that ozone does not change the molecular structure of water, as Live Water claims; if it did, the liquid would no longer be considered water.

None of this is to say that tap water in the U.S. is flawless. Cases like the travesty in Flint, Michigan, are very real, and they bring with them very real health consequences. We must still be a few turns short, because according to an article published in the New York Times last week, raw water is making a killing (hopefully not literally).

One of the problems with drinking untreated water is that animals, and sometimes people, do defecate in the wild.

Water - where it comes from, how its treated and what it's bottled in - has always been the subject of heated debates.

Many people are not so convinced about the validity of this fad.

"Tap water? You're drinking toilet water with birth control drugs in them", he told that publication. "There are a lot of people doing this with me".

"Our technology pulls pure water from vapour in the air, yielding clean drinking water and leaving out any other materials".

Sure, some people might be anxious about drinking tap water but hello, we're not living in the 1800s - Britta filter has been out for years.

You can be sure to find Live Water and the many alternative companies that will now spring up at this year's Burning Man. "You never know who you'll run into at the spring". It's discouraging to see citizens in one of the world's richest countries kick all that away and expose themselves to the same dangers children in Africa are forced to bear just to feel better than their peers.

Not to be deterred by this argument, public health officials still believe that untreated water poses more of a threat to health than the substances added during filtration and chlorination do and that the main objective for drinking water is to hydrate the body and not to increase mineral intake.
