However, the two sides were able to find common ground. Coming into 2017, Machado's career batting average was over.280, but his mark of.259 previous year lowered his total to.279. The 30-year-old left-hander made $11.4 million last season, when he had 15 saves and a 2.89 ERA.

The Orioles went to the increasingly common "file and trial" position in negotiation with arbitration-eligible players starting last season, meaning that once players exchange salary figures, they are slated to go to a hearing with no further negotiation.

Machado was obviously the most interesting case heading into Friday, considering he has been the subject of trade rumors in his last season before free agency.

Shortstop Tim Beckham agreed to a $3.35 million deal for 2018, according to a report from The Baltimore Sun.

Even in a down year by his standards, Machado still managed to hit 33 home runs for Baltimore in 2017. Over his career in the majors, Machado has posted a WAR clip of 27.9 He has hit 138 homers with 406 RBIs over the course of 764 games.

Right-hander Kevin Gausman and second baseman Jonathan Schoop have yet to reach agreement on salaries for 2018.
