An emergency warning has been issued for a "difficult to control" bushfire burning near Masonite Road, Tomago, just north of Newcastle.

The airport was closed on Saturday afternoon, with all flights cancelled or diverted due to the fire that is being fanned by strong westerly winds.

It is too late to leave for residents of Barry Close, Cabbage Tree and Massonite Roads, as well as areas close to the Newcastle Aiport, according to the RFS, who advised people to take shelter.

"Check and follow your bushfire survival plan and prepare for a bushfire in your area", RFS advice said.

Water bombing aircraft and more than 60 Rural Fire Service personnel worked to contain the blaze as it threatened homes in the area.

A RFS spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia that a local southerly wind change has pushed the fire in a northerly direction, and split it into two separate blazes.
