Affordable Care Act enrollment period ends this week

The ACA offers options for people who do not have access to health insurance including part-time workers, those who don't receive coverage through their employers and people who are self-employed.

Steve Butterfield, policy director for Consumers for Affordable Health Care, an Augusta-based health advocacy non-profit, said that auto-enrollments - people who choose to keep their own plans and are automatically renewed - haven't been counted yet and will substantially boost final enrollment numbers.

Even during this newest enrollment period (which the Trump administration cut in half from 90 to 45 days and refused to advertise), consumer interest has remained brisk, according to the AP.

"Although the plan premiums have gone up slightly there are tax credits available that could help those plans be more affordable for them", she said.

The Public Health Management Corporation, a nonprofit health institute, is also participating in insurance enrollment efforts.

According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' most recent weekly enrollment snapshot, as of December 2, 156,195 people had signed up for a marketplace plan in Virginia.

"We definitely don't want people to take the risk and assume (ACA premiums are) unaffordable", Craig said.

"I think we're going to be seeing a rush to get people enrolled, for them to get enrolled", McDonald said. Financial help increases when premiums increase, so most families in Arizona will be protected from premium changes.

The deadline comes early this year due to a decision by the Department of Health and Human Services to halve the open enrollment period, which started November 1.
