A choked-up Savannah Guthrie broke the news to viewers at the start of Today, clutching the hand of Hoda Kotb, who sat in for Lauer. The show runs for four hours, with Lauer and Guthrie hosting the first two.

Never mind the women he hurt, whom he suggests have said "untrue" things about him; Lauer has vowed to make it his full-time job to fix "the damage and disappointment I have left behind at home and at NBC".

The incident that got Lauer booted took place during the 2014 Sochi Olympics, NBC revealed on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, NBC announced its dismissal of Today Show co-anchor Matt Lauer following a report of "inappropriate sexual behavior" by its star host.

As a journalist, Lauer outlasted several co-hosts on the "Today" show.

"I've known Matt for 25 years and didn't know this Matt", Zucker said today, in an interview during Business Insider's Ignition conference. She said she eventually passed out, woke up on the floor of Lauer's office, and was taken to a nurse by Lauer's assistant. "It represented, after serious review, a clear violation of our company's standards".

Lack provided few details about Lauer's accuser or the nature of her allegation. He also allegedly invited another female employee to his office and then dropped his trousers, showing her his penis. After exposing himself, he reportedly chided the woman "for not engaging in a sexual act".

Variety said Lauer's harassment was abetted by a special button at his desk that activated a locking mechanism on his office door, enabling him to lock the door without getting up. He allegedly used it to welcome female employees and initiate inappropriate contact, knowing nobody could walk in on him, reports Variety. In one instance, a woman told Variety that Lauer called a "female employee to his office, and then dropped his trousers, showing her his penis". She told the newspaper that she didn't report the encounter because she didn't want to lose her job and felt ashamed.

The allegation was one of two new complaints lodged with NBC against Lauer on Wednesday, The Times reported.

Disgraced anchor Matt Lauer is breaking his silence after his contract with "Today" was terminated. When paired with Katie Couric, "Today" was the longtime ratings leader and was highly lucrative for NBC.

"This is a sad morning here at "Today" and at NBC News", Guthrie said before reading a note from NBC News Chairman Andy Lack.

Two hours later, NBC's Megyn Kelly noted the anguish on the faces of her colleagues but said, "what we don't see is the pain on the faces of those who found the courage to come forward, and it is still a terrifying thing to do".

She also said they don't know anything more than the statement they were given.

Lauer seemed to lob softball questions toward Trump - who faced allegations of sexual misconduct throughout his campaign - during his portion of the candidate forum, and repeatedly interrupted Clinton. He called for the firing of top executives at NBC and Comcast "for putting out so much Fake News". "Check out Andy Lack's past!"
