Liverpool legend Graeme Souness believes Paul Pogba's suspension for the Manchester derby is a blessing in disguise for Manchester United.

"He hasn't taken a big game by the scruff of the neck and dominated it".

During the Gunners' 1-3 hammering by the hands of Jose Mourinho's men, Pogba's late challenge that struck his studs into Hector Bellerin's knee saw him being showed a direct red card.

City are looking to make it a Premier League record of 14 consecutive wins but they go into the game on the back of their first defeat of the season against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Souness' agenda against Pogba is well known amongst United fans after he described the 24-year-old as "a bit of a YouTuber" in September.

"It's going to be a big atmosphere in the stadium and a big game with a big team and big players, so that's the game you want to play".

He added: The people around the club, when we start to win a lot of games, they start to say a lot of things and it's not good. "They keep winning and they didn't lose one game and obviously mentally they are very strong".

'Derbies are always special.

The midfielder has been catching flack recently for stating that he wishes Pep Guardiola's all-conquering Manchester City team would pick up some injuries.

Sounness has said that Pogba lacks a "basic understanding" of playing in midfield.

"Kill the game when you have one chance because they have quality as well in front and they can kill the game at any time". There will still be a long way to go'.

"Can City stop United?"

Often we have seen fringe players in a team stake their claims with opportunity like this, and this should come as an opportunity for other players that have been sidelined to come out with something to prove to the manager.

"We want to win. They need to win because they know that we are behind and we are closing and closing".
