Cyclone Ockhi batters Lakshadweep coast; death toll rises to 14, many missing

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, assuring him of support operations including necessary funds, according to local media.

Pune: The city is likely to experience light rainfall in the next 48 hours, while the minimum temperature is also expected to increase by one degree during this period, according to officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Dr K Satyagopal, the Relief Commissioner of Tamil Nadu said, "We are awaiting the exact list of fishermen cited in Lakshadweep".

11 people, mostly fishermen, remained missing in the two countries as almost 9,000 people sought shelter in relief camps.

Coconut trees have been uprooted at various places and houses damaged in eastern Kalpeni and Minicoy, sources said, adding the extent of the damage was being assessed.

Meteorological Department (IMD) has already warned that "high waves" towering 3-4.9m would be seen 10 km off Kerala's coast today. Besides, 138 fishermen have been rescued from the Lakshadweep islands, he said.

Originating near Sri Lanka over the Bay of Bengal, on Friday Cyclone Ockhi moved over the Arabian sea via Comorin, the confluence of the Bay of Bengal, triggering heavy rains and high speed wind in Lakshadweep islands.

Squally wind with speed reaching 45-55 kmph, gusting to 65 kmph, is very likely along the Kerala coast during the next 24 hours.

The Coast Guard immediately sailed as many as nine ships towards Search and Rescue (SAR) efforts.

Rescue operations were underway, with the Indian navy, air force and coast guard searching for dozens of fishermen unaccounted for in the Thiruvananthapuram-Kollam coastal area, said the New Delhi Television news channel.

The state chief minister met some injured fishermen, who were rescued from the choppy waters, at the medical college hospital in Thiruvanathapuram and enquired about their well- being.
