S Dashwanth, an accused in the rape and murder of a-seven-year-old girl and a suspect in the murder of his own mother, has escaped from the police custody near the Mumbai airport when Tamil Nadu police team was escorting him on Thursday a day after nabbing him. They knew that he had a weakness for betting on horse racing, and began to monitor race courses in several cities.

The Chennai Police, who arrested Daswant, had been staying at Hotel Satellite in Vile Parle East and were to fly out from the airport on Thursday night.

Yesterday, the cops were escorting him back to Chennai, and they made a decision to stop at a hotel in Vile Parle for lunch.

The commissioner then spoke to his Mumbai counterpart, Dattatray Padsalgikar, and a message went out across the city, asking everyone in the force to look out for the escaped suspect with handcuff on one hand.

Police are confident of nabbing Dhashwanth as he escaped with handcuffs and have sought help from the Mumbai police to locate him. The victim was his neighbour, and he allegedly used a puppy to lure her. The TN police arrested him under the POCSO Act and the Goondas Act.

The accused who was out on bail in the child rape and murder case was missing since December 2 when his mother Sarala was found murdered in his home with her jewellery missing. He hid her body for a day before stuffing it in a travel bag and burning it under a bridge. But just three days before the hearing, he allegedly killed his mother and fled with her valuables. The shocked police personnel ran behind him, but Dashvanth had vanished. "We are searching for the accused", said Anil Kumbhare, deputy commissioner of Mumbai Police (Zone VIII).
