Detroit Red Wings players are teaming up with the Salvation Army to ring bells and help keep potential donors from skating past the non-profits iconic red kettles.

This year's goal is to raise $350,000. The religious organization said it had raised a little more than 30 percent of its $750,000 goal.

"It's incredible", said Marcos Marquez with The Salvation Army, Portland Moore Street Corps.

"We run a bare-bones operation here with the Booth Center homeless shelter, which runs 24/7, and so that's a great expense and we need to help people in need through other avenues of Salvation Army ministry as well food pantry, clothing vouchers, those type of things", he said.

One important campaign happening now is the Red Kettle Campaign.

"Come alongside us to see the person not the label; together as one community we can help broken people rebuild their lives".

The Salvation Army IOW Homeless Service is supporting the Council by opening its doors to the homelessness from now until the end of March 2018 and the 2 organisations are asking any individuals, groups or businesses to join them in working in a volunteer capacity.

Major John Martin who received the gifts on behalf of The Salvation Army commented: "We are so grateful to St. Andrew's School for providing gifts as part of our Christmas Appeal".
