Next year, everything's gonna be purple.

The color of the year for 2018 is "ultra violet", according to Pantone Color Institute, a color consulting company that each year chooses a color that symbolizes design trends and cultural mood.

"From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection", Eiseman said, "Intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come".

"We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination", said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

Ultra Violet follows the 2017 color of the year, "Greenery", a grassy fresh, revitalizing shade that reflected new beginnings.

It's also said to reflect creativity, individuality and non-conformity, with a link to music icons including Prince, who was honoured with his own purple colour "Love Symbol #2" in August, and Jimi Hendrix, who played "Purple Haze" in concert days before his death in 1970. The use of purple-toned lighting in meditation spaces and other gathering places energizes the communities that gather there and inspire connection. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. "As individuals around the world become more fascinated with color and realize its ability to convey deep messages and meanings, designers and brands should feel empowered to use color to inspire and influence".

Pantone's color of the year has been running since the year 2000 - past winners include "honeysuckle", "marsala" and "sand dollar".
