Keenan Davidse showed he was over the illness that confined him to a hospital bed for four days by shooting an 8-under 63 Thursday to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Joburg Open.

Each competitor plays one round over the par-71 Bushwillow layout, one over the longer, par-72 Firethorn course and, after the cut, Firethorn hosts the final two rounds.

The 35-year-old South African will miss the co-sanctioned Sunshine Tour and European Tour event at the Randpark Golf Club after two of his fingers got jammed in an airport trolley.

"Obviously, I am very happy". "I've worked very hard. I'll be surprised if a South African doesn't win the tournament and having played with Dylan in Mauritius last weekend, he's definitely one of the favourites", Oosthuizen said. Ticket prices are R80 per day for Thursday and Friday and R100 for Saturday and Sunday or R180 for the four days. Then my wife had flu and then I got flu and lost a lot of weight.

Baldwin got off to the flawless start with an eagle at the opening hole, and he made another eagle at the 12th before closing with two straight birdies to return a 64 which was later matched by English compatriot Morrison. Burmester's 81 came in the 2010 SAA Pro-Am Invitational but he's made big strides since and became a European Tour victor earlier this year.

There will, however, be some struggling to possibly make the halfway cut today, among them last week's victor in Mauritius and the highest ranked player in the field at 55, Dylan Frittelli.
