Illinois Pediatricians Call For CHIP Reauthorization

Gov. John Bel Edwards sent a letter to the members of Louisiana's Congressional Delegation urging them to reauthorize the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), a fundamental element of health care access for more than 122,000 Louisiana children in need through the Louisiana Children's Health Insurance Program (LaCHIP).

Jenny Pinkwater is executive director of the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

"This responsible, stopgap solution will help families and states while Congress finishes the job to extend funding for children's health insurance, public health priorities and Medicare extenders that seniors rely upon", Reps.

Officials said lawmakers are expected to take into account a Continuing Resolution (CR) that includes a technical adjustment to target some states' dwindling funds for the program - in light of its funding stream having expired September 30. If lawmakers don't re-authorize CHIP, the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services says the state's funding could run out in a year.

The Burlington Free Press reports CHIP in Vermont is a funding source for the Dr. Dynasaur program, which provides coverage for pregnant women and children.
