A young, healthy mother of two died November 28, one day after doctors told her she had the flu. Gonzalez said Murrieta was successfully resuscitated once, but doctors' second try proved unsuccessful, and the 20-year-old was declared dead at 3:25 p.m. that day. Murrieta went home sick from her warehouse job the following Sunday.

Through the night, Murrieta got worse.

"I saw her on Thanksgiving and she was fine and perfectly healthy", Murrieta's aunt Stephanie Gonzales told Buzzfeed News. "I still don't understand how this happened to her so fast - she went from feeling a little sick on Sunday to going to urgent care on Monday and then being gone by Tuesday afternoon", Gonzales told BuzzFeed News of her niece, whom she described as amusing and loud. According to Fox10, 20-year-old Alani Murrieta of Phoenix, Arizona checked into the hospital last Tuesday morning and died by afternoon.

Gonzales says Murrieta had no pre-existing condition and her flu simply turned into pneumonia.

"Her oxygen levels were low".

The mom-of-two was put on a ventilator but died just hours later when her heart stopped. An x-ray revealed a bad case of pneumonia, Gonzalez told BuzzFeed News, a common bacterial infection of the lungs commonly marked by fluid build-up, according to MayoClinic. "Never in a million years would we have thought that we would have lost her that day like this". "It's just an ominous annual lesson".

Murrieta leaves behind her children, two-year-old AJ and 6-month-old Jr.

Because Murrieta was generally healthy and young, her family wasn't just deeply saddened, but completely caught off guard by her death.
